Get In My Belly: The KG Guide to Summer Snacking 🍉🍍🌶️🧄
By Kevin Gallagher | KG Full Life Performance
Summer is one of the easiest times of year to improve your nutrition.
Also, watermelon.
Lots and lots of watermelon.
The weather is better. We’re outside more. The grill gets fired up. Farmers markets are everywhere. Fresh fruits and vegetables actually taste like they’re supposed to.
Yet somehow people still think healthy eating requires expensive supplements, complicated meal plans, or snacks that come in a package with 47 ingredients.
My advice? Keep it simple.
Summer Is Nature’s Snack Season
When clients ask me for healthy snack ideas, they’re usually expecting some secret food they’ve never heard of.
The truth is that some of the best snacks are sitting in the produce section.
No nutrition degree required.
No influencer discount code needed.
Just real food.
My Favorite Summer Fruits
🍉 Watermelon
If you’ve worked with me for any amount of time, you know I’m a huge watermelon fan.
It’s refreshing, hydrating, low in calories, and tastes like summer. A bowl of cold watermelon on a hot day beats most processed snacks without even trying.
Bonus points if it’s dripping down your arm while you’re standing outside on a 90-degree day.
🍓 Berries
Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are loaded with fiber and pair perfectly with Greek yogurt.
🍎 Apples
Simple. Portable. Affordable. Available everywhere.
🍌 Bananas
One of the best grab-and-go snacks on the planet.
🍑 Peaches
When peaches are in season, they’re hard to beat.
Don’t Forget the Vegetables
Vegetables don’t have to be boring.
Some of my favorites include:
🥕 Carrots
🥒 Cucumbers
🌶️ Bell peppers
🍅 Cherry tomatoes
Pair them with hummus and you’ve got an easy snack that actually fills you up.
The KG Rule: Protein + Produce
Fruit is healthy.
Vegetables are healthy.
But if your goal is fat loss, improved health, better energy, or controlling hunger, protein should still be your foundation.
The biggest challenge in fat loss isn’t knowing what to eat. It’s managing hunger long enough to stay consistent.
The goal isn’t always to eat fewer calories in the next 30 minutes. The goal is to avoid raiding the pantry two hours later.
That’s why I’m always talking about protein.
When clients tell me they’re hungry between meals, my first question is usually:
“Where’s the protein?”
Protein helps keep you full longer. It helps preserve muscle while you’re losing weight. It helps create more stable energy throughout the day. Most importantly, it makes healthy eating easier because you’re not constantly battling hunger.
Some of my favorite high-protein snacks include:
✅ Nonfat Greek yogurt
✅ Cottage cheese
✅ Protein shakes
✅ Hard-boiled eggs
✅ Turkey roll-ups
✅ Edamame
Then add fruit or vegetables if you’re still hungry.
An apple by itself is great.
An apple with Greek yogurt is even better.
A banana is great.
A banana with a protein shake is even better.
Protein plus produce is a winning combination almost every time.
A KG-Approved Summer Snack
One of my favorite things to keep in the refrigerator during the summer is crock pot shredded chicken.
KG stamped and approved. 👊🏼💙
Throw a bunch of chicken breasts in the crock pot, add some seasoning, let it cook, shred it up, and you’ve got protein ready to go for days.
One of my favorite combinations is:
🍗 Crock pot shredded chicken
🍍 Fresh pineapple
🌶️ A little hot sauce
I know it sounds a little strange if you’ve never tried it. But the sweet pineapple, savory chicken, and spicy hot sauce combination is fantastic.
More importantly, it’s easy.
The easier healthy eating becomes, the more likely you are to stick with it.
That’s a big part of the KG philosophy.
We’re not trying to build the perfect diet.
We’re trying to build a lifestyle that works on busy Tuesdays, stressful Thursdays, weekends at the ball fields, and random summer afternoons when you’re standing in the kitchen looking for something to eat.
Don’t Be Afraid to Make Healthy Food Taste Good
One of my favorite summer snacks is fresh pineapple with hot sauce.
I know. It sounds a little crazy.
But the sweet and spicy combination is incredible.
I also put hot sauce on way more things than I probably should.
The point is this:
Healthy eating doesn’t need to be bland.
Season your food.
Use herbs.
Use spices.
Use hot sauce.
Make healthy food taste amazing so you’ll actually keep eating it.
Support Local
If you’re local, stop by and see my Uncle Tommy, better known as Tommy Peppers, at the Hereford Farmers Market.
From all things leafy and green, to tomatoes, peppers, radishes, and whatever else is in season, you’ll find plenty of ways to fill your kitchen with real food that actually tastes good.
And if Tommy has garlic?
Hide your vampires.
It’s the best damn garlic this side of the Mississippi.
And while you’re there, grab a bottle of Chesapeake Red Farm-to-Table Hot Sauce.
Hot damnnnn. 💙🌶️
I put that sh*t on everything (Frank beat me to this).
Eggs. Chicken. Vegetables ANNNND fruit. If you’ve never tried pineapple with hot sauce, don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming healthy food has to be boring.
Fresh local produce, incredible garlic, and a little hot sauce say otherwise.
Sometimes healthy eating isn’t about finding some magical superfood.
It’s about filling your kitchen with real food, making it taste amazing, and building habits you can actually stick with.
Summer Nutrition Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect
You don’t need a detox.
You don’t need a cleanse.
You don’t need a miracle supplement.
You don’t need to spend $9 on a protein cookie.
Eat more fruits.
Eat more vegetables.
Prioritize protein.
Drink your water.
Get outside.
Move your body.
Enjoy summer.
Most of the time, the simple stuff works the best.
